Word is Out: Cuts to Seniors’ Earned Benefits are on the Ballot this November

The following statement was issued by Richard Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, regarding Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s comments about cutting so-called “entitlements”:

“There is no doubt that Social Security and Medicare are on the ballot in the midterm elections. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell explicitly stated yesterday that Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid need to be cut. That is a dire warning to anyone who cares about these programs for current or future beneficiaries.

“The federal deficit grew to $779 billion in fiscal 2018, a direct result of the GOP Tax Scam passed last year. But instead of holding his party accountable for the huge tax breaks awarded to corporations and the wealthiest 1% of Americans, Senator McConnell blamed a bipartisan unwillingness to cut earned benefits. We want to remind everyone that seniors have worked a lifetime for them.

“Sen. McConnell’s comments are just another in a long line of Republican declarations that seniors must now pay for the tax scam by seeing their already modest benefits cut even more. Rep. Steve Stivers of Ohio, House Republican Campaign Chair, and White House economic advisor Lawrence Kudlow are making similar promises.

“We take Senator McConnell at his word. Given the chance, he will side with CEOs, corporations and the wealthiest of the wealthy over retirees and working Americans.

“The only way to stop this assault on our earned benefits is to vote for candidates who will fight to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid from any cuts that affect seniors, people with disabilities, children and every family who relies on these programs.”
